Throat Pain and Laryngitis
Laryngitis is one of the most annoying conditions you can have, at least for most people. The disease itself is the
result of inflammation in the larynx. This can sometimes result from screaming or yelling. Other times, this
inflammation is the result of an infection or irritation in that region of the body.
Pain caused by laryngitis varies, depending on the underlying condition.
The specific part of the body that gets infected is usually two mucous membranes that cover the cartilage as
well as the muscle in the voice box. Most of the time vocal chords in the voice box move very smoothly. When you
have laryngitis inflammation makes it ten times more difficult for them to move freely. Laryngitis is most commonly
known for making it difficult to speak or talk to people.
There are several different types of laryngitis. There is acute laryngitis as well as chronic laryngitis. Acute
laryngitis lasts for a shorter period of time, but is more severe. While chronic laryngitis is less severe, but
lasts for a longer period of time. Sometimes laryngitis is triggered by a viral infection, but this is not always
the case.
There are several common symptoms of laryngitis. The common symptoms of laryngitis include an
- extremely dry cough,
- a sore throat,
- weakened voice and hoarseness, and
- difficulty of breathing (especially in children).
If you have any of these symptoms for more than a day, you may be coming down with a case of laryngitis.
The majority of laryngitis cases do not last long and improve after a short period of time. It is still possible
to get a more acute and severe case of laryngitis. Some causes of acute laryngitis include, but are not limited
to
- viral infections similar to ones that cause the common cold,
- excessive talking, yelling or screaming,
- viruses that are similar to the mumps and the measles, and
- in rare cases some bacterial infections.
Chronic laryngitis is in some cases worse than acute laryngitis because it can lasts for weeks at a time. This
type of laryngitis is usually caused by abuse to the vocal chords in one way or another.
It can be caused by too much yelling or screaming, smoking or breathing in chemicals, acid reflux, drinking too
much alcohol, and using your voice too much. There are things you can do to reduce the time that you have
laryngitis.
One of the most useful things you can do is to simply stop using your voice a lot and drink a lot of fluids!
Just make sure you rest and you will be better in no time!
