Misdiagnosis of Ankle
Pain May Have Led to Young Woman's Death
It started with a severe ankle pain. 23 year old Andrea Norris of the United Kingdom died recently of deep vein
thrombosis (DVT)that three weeks after a hospital failed to diagnose her broken leg. She was not x-rayed and was
told she simply had a sprained ankle.
Worse, even after it was learned she had a fracture, doctors were not able to identify DVT wyhen she told them
of her symptoms. DVT can be fatal if the clot dislodges and travels to the lungs. This is known as a pulmonary
embolism.
Deep vein thrombosis is defined as a blood clot or "thrombus" that forms in a deep vein.
Norris was a learning support assistant at a further education college when she slipped and broke her left leg.
Her fiance discovered her on the floor of their home and called for help, but paramedics were not able to save
her.
